In 1993, he founded the Japan Institute of Stress Control and was its director until 2002. Later he established a research center for stress control at Nihon University Hospital and a university for stress management at Kansai University. In addition to his academic career, Hiraide has been active as a writer and lecturer on stress management. He has published more than 100 books on stress control and psychotherapy, as well as many popular articles on these issues in national newspapers and magazines.

In 1994, he wrote Neurotics' Guide to Self-Help (日本人の自己ヘルプガイド), a book for readers who want to take charge of their own health care. This book is a bestseller with a circulation of more than 1 million copies since its publication. In this same year he also wrote The Handbook of Stress Control (局所型ストレス制御), another bestseller that was translated into Chinese and Korean. He has lectured widely on this topic both in Japan and abroad such as at Harvard University, New York City Bar Association, National Bar Association of the Philippines, American Society of Addiction Medicine Congress, World Congress on Stress Control and Therapy (London), International Congress on Stress Control (Paris), National Academy of Neuropsychiatric and Behavioral Sciences (USA).
